Mold and Indoor Air
Quality Testing
Mold is potentially dangerous to human health because of the mycotoxins they produce. Mold spores are ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Some symptoms commonly reported with mold exposure include inflammation, asthma, skin rashes, lyme disease and fatigue.
Mold eradication is difficult because the spores usually land on surfaces, and when they find the right conditions, they continue to grow. For this reason, it is best to prevent mold from growing in the first place. It means that you have to be on the lookout for any leaks in your home’s interior and exterior.
Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman offers mold testing
for residents within a 50 mile radius of Cornelius, serving both North Carolina and South Carolina.
Mold testing services are non-invasive. It is a visual examination of the home exterior and interior. Results are based on scientific laboratory findings. Since Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman does not offer remediation there is no risk of judgement compromising the results. Integrity is guaranteed.
Water is the main cause of mold growth in a home. If you have a mold problem, treat it immediately and resolve the water problem. Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman is here help you test for mold in your home. Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman has a licensed professional inspector who provides high-quality services for you. Clients receive a detailed report including laboratory findings and a suggested course of action. Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman conducts mold tests in two ways; surface and air sampling.
Surface Mold Sampling
Surface mold sampling is the most common method of mold testing and is effective in testing for mold presence. Typically, the inspector uses an inspection kit to collect samples, which are then sent to the laboratory for testing. There are different sample collection methods in this mold sampling method: tape sampling, carpet sampling, and swab sampling.
The most common areas to collect samples from are:
- Pipes, especially where there have been leaks
- Areas with roof leaks
- Basements, especially ones that have leaks and flooding
- Areas around HVAC systems
- Areas with moisture
- Areas where firewood is stored
- Areas in the home with poor air circulation
Tape mold sampling happens to be the most common type of surface mold sampling. Here, the inspector uses a sampling kit to collect several samples to be sent for laboratory testing. Tape sampling kits can be obtained from a laboratory, and they are best for collecting samples of visible mold. Kulumo Home Inspection Services, offers this type of mold test for you.
Carpet mold sampling is taking place in areas within the house where there is a carpet. A sample is taken from a carpet snip, or a clear vacuum bag remains. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for testing for the availability of mold. Commonly, if a carpet sample tests positive for the presence of mold, or if the mold is visible, the carpet should be disposed of carefully and replaced with a new one. The reason for this is that mold is difficult to eradicate from a surface.
Swab mold sampling is another method of mold testing. It entails using a cellulose swab treated with a liquid preservative to collect samples of a surface mold for testing. The swab is then sent to a laboratory for testing to confirm the presence of mold.
Air Mold Sampling
The levels of spore concentration outdoors are compared with those indoors to determine mold infestation level. From there, the method of mold treatment is determined to ensure the home is safe for you.
Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman has quality equipment to test mold, including humidity gauges, thermal imaging cameras (Infrared IR), moisture meter, rotameter, and borescopes. These tools help collect samples of suspected mold and test them for the presence of mold.
In order to avoid mold spores during testing, the following protective equipment is used: gloves, respirators, goggles, protective clothing, and boots.

We all need a healthy home and a healthy night’s sleep to regenerate the body. However, we are exposed to various sources of radiation, both inside and outside our home. Although invisible the radiation has a significant influence on our body and health.
A home radiation assessment will allow you to know what is happening. Then we can develop a plan of action with the right products and the right budget.
We are exposed to:
- Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) radiation from numerous sources such as smart meters, laptops, TV’s, alarm clocks, baby monitors etc
- Electric Fields (EF) from wiring in the walls
- Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation from cell towers
- Magnetic Fields (MF) from transmission and distribution lines
Sleep is essential. Sleep helps to boost your immune system, so you can fight off illnesses more effectively.
So, making your bedroom a place where your exposure to radiation is reduced is vital to your body being able to recover.
With a home assessment you are able to:
- assess the source of radiation
- create solutions to reduce the radiation levels and protect you and your family
The GEOVITAL Academy only works with measurable and verifiable solutions.
The EMF Home and Bedroom Assessment Process
The following is included in an EMF home assessment:
- The measurement of low frequency magnetic fields from power cables and wiring running past the home, to the home and to some extent into the home
- The measurement of low frequency magnetic fields from solar panels and inverters
- The measurement of low frequency electric field exposure, here we ask you to lie on your bed and then we measure the body for exposure, we actually find this is an issue in 90-95% of the homes.
- Measurement of high frequency radiation. This is also measured whilst you are lying on the bed.
The home office and other areas in your home where you would spend a significant amount of daytime hours.will also be assessed. You will receive suggestions on how you personally can manage the various forms of radiation found in these areas.
At the end of the assessment you will receive:
- a measurement protocol report
- a summary of the findings and,
- an approach on how to address the findings if needed.
Close to a power line? What is a safe distance?
Peer reviewed research have found over the years that you definitely don’t want a reading of just 1 milligauss (1 mG) in your home. Some instruments use a flat measurement, others a weighted measurement, as a guideline you generally don’t want to exceed between 0.8 mG and 0.3 mG.
Here are some distances when you should measure EMF exposure:
- High voltage power lines (transmission lines, aka the ‘walkers’) – anywhere within ¾ of a mile.
- Transformer box – 500 feet.
- Electrical substation – 500 feet.
- Street power lines on ‘your’ side of the street (above or underground).
- Solar panels being present on the home.
Radon Gas Testing
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that originates from a combination of uranium, radium, or thorium dissolved in the groundwater, soil, or rocks. Radon is odorless and colorless, yet so dangerous. Testing is the only way you will know the radon level. Any home may have an elevated radon level.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , the maximum “acceptable” level of radon is 4.0 pCi/L, but even that level is not “safe”, per se. The EPA strongly recommends you consider radon mitigation between levels 2.0 and 4.0. For perspective, the average outdoor air level of radon is 0.4 pCi/L. The EPA, actually recommends testing every two years.
Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman has a certified indoor air quality consultant to advise on how to prepare for the radon inspection. An electronic radon tester is placed for a minimum of 48 hours in the home. A detailed report provides the home radon levels at the time of the test period. Kulumo Home Inspection Services Lake Norman does not offer remediation services, you may have peace of mind that the findings presented are based on the data collected.
